Kaylan is an only child, a one-year-old boy who lives with his mother in a small two-room house. His mother works as a housemaid, earning approximately KSh 2,000 per month. They rely heavily on her employer for food, and if none is provided, they often go without. Despite their challenges, Kaylan is a lively and cheerful boy. A day before seeking medical help, Kaylan developed a cough and chest congestion. His mother suspected an upper respiratory tract infection and, following advice from her employer, purchased Septrin from a nearby chemist. However, Kaylan’s condition did not improve, prompting his mother to take him to Bokoli Sub-County Hospital. Upon arrival, she did not have the financial means to pay for treatment. Kaylan presented with symptoms of cough, chest congestion, rapid breathing, and a high fever of 39.9°C. Laboratory tests confirmed a diagnosis of malaria and pneumonia. He was admitted for inpatient care and stayed in the hospital for two days.
