Derick W., 9

Derick is a lively 9-year-old boy from a family of seven. He lives with both parents, and his father is the sole breadwinner, relying on small-scale farming that brings in very little, not enough to cater for basic needs. The family resides in a single-room house made of iron sheets and mud, and their financial struggles make it difficult to access even basic healthcare. Derick, who is known for his cheerful and playful nature, especially enjoys school and spending time with his siblings and friends. He was brought to the facility by his mother for his routine sickle cell check-up. She shared that he missed five days of school in the past month due to general body weakness and occasional abdominal pain. Derick has a known history of significantly low hemoglobin, for which he required a blood transfusion last year. Although he was prescribed folic acid and other medication, the family is often unable to afford the medication regularly due to limited resources.

Derrick, who is a known sickle cell patient, was diagnosed with anemia. He received timely treatment and was given medication to help manage the condition. Once he stabilized, he was discharged and given a return date for his regular monthly check-up. During a follow-up visit, Derrick was in good spirits and had resumed his normal activities. His father expressed heartfelt gratitude to Helpster Charity for their support during a challenging time for the family.

He was treated and given drugs needed and if this could have not done on time it could have resulted to organ damage, pain, and increased risk of infection.
