Liandro P., 3

Liandro is a 3-year-old girl living with her grandparents in a one-room mud house in Pap Nyadiel, Kenya. She was abandoned by her biological mother when she was just two months old. Her grandparents, who are elderly, rely on small-scale subsistence farming for their livelihood. According to her grandmother, Liandro is normally cheerful and playful when she's well, especially around familiar people, but becomes quiet and reserved around strangers. Recently, Liandro developed a persistent cough, for which her grandmother administered over-the-counter medication, but there was no improvement. The following day, her condition worsened—she began vomiting, lost her appetite, appeared generally weak, and experienced multiple convulsions throughout the day. By evening, her condition had deteriorated so much that she became unresponsive. Alarmed, the grandmother sought help from a neighbor who, upon seeing Liandro’s condition, gave her money to hire a motorbike to rush the child to the hospital. They arrived at the emergency department at 8:00 p.m.

Liandro was brought to the hospital exhibiting coughs, vomiting, general body weakness and convulsions. Her tests were run in the lab, and she was diagnosed with acute kidney injury and severe malaria. These conditions warranted admission, and she was promptly admitted to the ward for proper and close management.She was treated and she responded well to treatment and was eventually discharged on orals like paracetamol, AL an antimalarial), and ORS drug for every time she had an episode of vomiting. A visit by the volunteer to her home revealed that Liandro was okay, the volunteer found Liandro playing with her neighbours an indication she had gone back to her normal life.
