Peter stays with his maternal grandmother and other 12 family members. Peter's mother went to the city of Nairobi in search of a job; she works as a nanny now, and every end of the month she sends her mother the money she earns so that she can use it to buy some necessary items in the house. Peter's grandmother takes Peter wherever she goes; she has a small farm which she tills to get some food for her family. Peter is generally a happy child, and his grandmother was concerned when he became irritable and was not as playful as he used to be.

Peter was brought hospital with diarrhoea and vomiting and was treated after taking laboratory tests. The next day, when Peter was brought for a follow-up, he was feeling much better, just like his grandmother had mentioned. He smiled at everyone, but he only wanted his grandmother to hold him and not anyone else.

Peter has lost lots of fluids due to vomiting and diarrhoea, and needs to be given fluids intravenously, as well as antibiotics, to suppress the stomach infection. If not treated, the symptoms will persist, and the stomach infection may furtherly develop. Further loss of fluids may cause kidney complications. Child's life will be moderately changed if treatment is initiated early enough so the illness doesn't progress further to severe pneumonia, that may cause lung damage and other complications.Peter needs to be treated with antibiotics, and supplemented with vitamins to strengthen the immune system.
