Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.
That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Ayaji Medical and Diagnostic Center

Sarkin Hausawa Ward, Opposite AY Maikifi Filling Station, Gashua, Yobe State, Nigeria

Background

Fatima's world was painted in shades of dust and faded dreams. From their small, sun-baked mud house in Gashua, she could see the shimmering heat haze distorting the distant, taller buildings of the town. Her parents, Baba and Mama, worked tirelessly, their hands calloused and backs aching from dawn till dusk. Baba toiled on other people's farms, his meager earnings barely enough to buy the daily millet and a few precious vegetables. One day, Fatima started feeling unwell due to a hernia, experiencing a dull ache and a noticeable bulge in her umbilical area that worsened when she coughed or stood for extended periods, prompting her to seek medical attention. On presentation at our facility, she was evaluated and diagnosed with Umbilical Hernia.

Medical history

Fatima was diagnosed with Symptomatic Umbilical hernia and was admitted for corrective surgery. The surgery went well with no complications, and she was monitored before being discharged home with her parents. FATIMA'S full recovery took about six weeks, as prescribed by doctor. She made sure not to rush back into playing, understanding the importance of allowing his body to heal completely. When she finally stepped back onto the field, he felt stronger and more confident than before. Fatima's experience taught her the importance of listening to his body and seeking medical attention when something felt wrong. Her successful treatment and recovery not only resolved his hernia problem but also allowed her to continue pursuing his academic goals and enjoy his active lifestyle without discomfort or worry.

Outcome

The most common symptom is a visible or palpable bulge, which may become more prominent when standing, coughing, straining, or lifting. The bulge might disappear when lying down. Other symptoms can include: * Pain or discomfort (aching, burning, or pressure sensation) at the site of the bulge, especially during activities that increase abdominal pressure. * A feeling of heaviness or dragging in the affected area. * In men, an inguinal hernia can sometimes cause pain and swelling around the testicles if the protruding intestine descends into the scrotum. When to Seek Medical Attention (Emergency Signs): While many hernias are not immediately dangerous, some can become a medical emergency. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following: * A painful bulge that cannot be pushed back in. * Worsening pain. * Nausea and/or vomiting. * Difficulty having a bowel movement or passing gas. * Bloating. * Fever. * The hernia site becomes discolored (red, purple, or dark). These symptoms can indicate a strangulated hernia, where the blood supply to the trapped tissue is cut off, leading to tissue death. Treatment for Hernias: Treatment depends on the type, size, and symptoms of the hernia. * Watchful Waiting: For small, asymptomatic hernias, a doctor may recommend monitoring the hernia without immediate intervention. * Surgical Repair: Surgery is the most common and often definitive treatment for hernias, especially if they are causing pain, growing larger, or at risk of complications. There are several surgical approaches: * Open Hernia Repair: A single incision is made over the hernia site. The protruding tissue is gently pushed back into place, and the weakened muscle wall is repaired with stitches, often reinforced with a synthetic mesh (hernioplasty). * Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (Minimally Invasive): Several small incisions are made. A tiny camera and specialized surgical instruments are inserted to repair the hernia from inside the abdomen, usually using mesh. This often results in less pain and a faster recovery. * Robotic Hernia Repair: Similar to laparoscopic surgery, but the surgeon uses a robotic system to guide the surgical instruments with enhanced precision and control. Your doctor will discuss the best treatment option for your specific situation, considering the hernia's characteristics, your overall health, and your desired activity level.
