Syprose A., 22

Syprose is a 22-year-old mother of one and a high school graduate. She was raised by her grandmother after her mother left when she was just a year old. She currently lives with her grandmother and six cousins in a modest two-room semi-permanent house. Due to limited space, some of her cousins sleep in the cooking area outside the main house. In her free time, Syprose enjoys reading the Bible. She recalls falling ill one day and visiting a hospital for a malaria test. During a routine check-up, she was unexpectedly informed that she was five months pregnant. Shocked by the news, she shared it with her guardian, who encouraged her to keep the baby and start attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics. Syprose went on to attend four ANC visits. Unfortunately, the child’s father denied responsibility and distanced himself from both Syprose and the pregnancy. At her last ANC visit, her blood pressure was borderline, and a small amount of protein was detected in her urine. The nurse warned her of the risk of developing pre-eclampsia and advised her to watch for any warning signs, monitor her blood pressure weekly, and ensure she gave birth at a health facility, as blood pressure complications can also occur after delivery. She also had a second degree tear which wsa repaired

Syprose came to the hospital with complaints of pain radiating from her lower back. Being pregnant, she was rushed to the maternity ward. She gave birth normally but experienced a tear, which was sutured. She was returned to the ward and was discharged on orals when stable. A visit to the home by the volunteer revealed that she had recovered and had gone back to her normal life

When pre-eclampsia presents with borderline blood pressure (around 140/90 mmHg) and minimal symptoms or complications, the prognosis is generally favorable — but only with close and consistent monitoring. Close monitoring ought to be done too during deliver and for 42 days after delivery
