Leonard, a 16-year-old boy from a low-income rural family, lives with his grandfather, a security guard who earns about KSh 2,000 per month and is the household’s sole breadwinner. Due to financial hardship, Leonard has never attended clinic visits and has been unable to afford medication or consultation fees. Despite these difficulties, he remains determined and hardworking. He learned about Helpster Charity through local community health promoters, who had been sensitized on the condition and informed about how Helpster operates. Diagnosed with sickle cell disease since childhood, Leonard was recently brought to the health facility by his guardian with complaints of chest pain, cough, chest congestion, and fever. After thorough evaluation, he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and acute chest syndrome.

Leonard, a known sickle cell patient, was admitted to the hospital with severe pneumonia and acute chest syndrome. Upon admission, he received comprehensive treatment, including antibiotics, sickle cell management medications, and rehydration fluids to stabilize his condition. Over the course of three days, Leonard’s health improved significantly, allowing him to be discharged from the hospital. He was advised to continue his care at home and to attend monthly follow-up clinics for ongoing monitoring and management of his sickle cell condition. During a follow-up, his grandfather expressed immense gratitude to Helpster Charity for providing free medical care, emphasizing how the support from Bulondo Health Centre had made a meaningful difference in Leonard’s recovery and overall well-being.

If Leornard left untreated, severe pneumonia and acute chest syndrome (ACS) in sickle cell patients could have been life-threatening, leading to respiratory failure, organ damage, and even death. ACS, a common complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), involves lung injury and breathing difficulties due to blocked blood flow or infection. Leonard was given prompt and aggressive treatment and is out of danger.
