Umar is a calm child who likes going to school and helping his father. Because of his condition, he's unable to attend school now despite the ongoing exams at the school. He lives with his family in IDPs camp in Damaturu. They were displaced by Boko Haram insurgents from Gujba town in Yobe State. Umar presented at our hospital with 2 weeks history of body swelling, loose stools, vomiting, abdominal distention, fever, headache, and weakness. On evaluation, he was diagnosed with Edematous Severe Acute Malnutrition complicated by Enteric Enteritis, Typhoid Perforations, and KIV Nephrotic Syndrome.

Umar was admitted in our facility and managed as a case of severe acute malnutrition complicated by Enteritis r/o Typhoid ileal Perforation KIV Nephrotic syndrome. He had adequate and timely administration of parenteral medications and other supportive measures. He responded well to the management instituted as presenting symptoms subsided. Following the resolve of most of the presenting symptoms, he was discharged home on oral medications to complete his recovery and was scheduled for follow-up.

With appropriate and timely nutritional rehabilitation, patients with malnutrition have a good chance of survival and recovery. And complications are also treatable with the appropriate medications. However, when left unattended, the outcome is detrimental.
