Zainab Abubakar is an 11 year old girl living with her mother and three siblings in a small one-bedroom apartment in Gwange. Zainab presented with a history of persistent cough, high-grade fever, severe catarrh, ear pain, and generalized body aches. These symptoms progressively weakened her, leaving her listless and unable to attend school or engage in play. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and her mother, deeply concerned and unable to manage the illness at home, brought her to Nakowa for urgent medical attention. On presentation at our hospital and after thorough clinical evaluation, Zainab was diagnosed with: Malaria with enteric fever, Otitis media, Acute respiratory infection (ARI).

Zainab was promptly started on treatment at Nakowa after presenting with high fever, body aches, cough, nasal congestion, and ear pain. She received Amoxicillin tablets and Ciprofloxacin ear drops to manage her infections, while Lonart DS and Loratidine helped ease respiratory symptoms and allergies. Paracetamol, both orally and via injection, was administered to reduce fever and relieve body aches, and Vitamin C supported her immunity and overall recovery. Injections of Emal 150mg were given for malaria, and her progress was closely monitored using sterile syringes. Over the course of treatment, Zainab’s fever gradually subsided, her cough and nasal congestion improved, and the ear pain lessened significantly. She regained strength, returned to her usual playful and active self, and was able to resume school and daily activities. Thanks to the timely medical care and support of Helpster Charity, Zainab made a full recovery, bringing immense relief and happiness to her mother and family.

With timely and appropriate treatment, Zainab’s prognosis is generally good. Malaria with enteric fever, otitis media, and acute respiratory infections typically respond well to antimalarial and antibiotic therapy, along with supportive care such as hydration, fever management, and rest. Full recovery is expected when medications are taken as prescribed. However, delayed or inadequate treatment could lead to complications such as severe anemia, persistent infection, dehydration, or worsening ear and respiratory conditions. Close monitoring and adherence to treatment are essential to ensure complete recovery.
