Mohammed Usman is a 6 year old boy and the third child among five siblings. He lives with his stepmother and four step-siblings in a small one-bedroom and parlor home in the Gwange area of Maiduguri. Mohammed began to complain of persistent cough, high fever, catarrh, and body aches, which left him weak, restless, and unable to play or attend his evening classes. His condition quickly worsened, and he became very sick, alarming his family. Due to their financial challenges, his parents struggled to provide proper care at home, so they urgently took him to Nakowa to seek medical help, hoping for timely treatment to save their son. Mohammed Usman was promptly attended to at Nakowa after presenting with fever, cough, body aches, and catarrh. He was diagnosed with malaria combined with enteric fever and an acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI). His treatment plan included Artemeter tablets and Emal injections to manage malaria, Amoxicillin tablets and Ceftriaxone IV injections for the enteric fever and respiratory infection, and paracetamol both orally and via injection to control fever and relieve body aches. Piriton was given to ease nasal congestion, Vitamin C and Astymin capsules supported immunity and overall recovery. All injections were administered with sterile syringes, and his progress was closely monitored. Over the course of treatment, Mohammed’s fever gradually subsided, his cough and catarrh improved, and his strength returned. He was able to eat, play, and engage in his usual activities again. Thanks to the timely intervention and support from Helpster Charity, Mohammed made a full recovery, bringing immense relief and joy to his family.

With timely and appropriate treatment, Mohammed’s prognosis is generally good. Malaria with enteric fever and acute respiratory tract infections typically respond well to antimalarial and antibiotic medications, along with supportive care such as hydration, fever management, and rest. Full recovery is expected when medications are taken as prescribed. However, delayed or inadequate treatment could lead to complications such as severe anemia, systemic infection, dehydration, or worsening respiratory distress. Close monitoring and follow-up are essential to ensure complete recovery.
