Joy lives with her father and siblings, having lost her mother two years ago. Due to her health challenges, she stopped attending school two months ago. However, she remains hopeful about recovering and returning to school, as she dreams of becoming a doctor one day. Joy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year ago. Unfortunately, after receiving medication for a short period, her father was no longer able to afford the ongoing treatment. As a result, she went without medication and her condition worsened. She eventually came to the hospital feeling very weak, with difficulty in breathing, vomiting, and yellowing of the eyes. She was diagnosed and treated for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication of uncontrolled diabetes.

Joy Akinyi was diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis. She was treated with hydrating fluids and insulin for 5 days until she became stable her condition improved. She was then linked and enrolled to a type 1 diabetes center where she will be getting her insulins refills. Joy is now feeling okay and back to her usual activities. Joy is a happy girl , her father is happy too. She looks forward to going back to school to join her classmates and also teach others about signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes and tell them it a manageable condition.

The prognosis is usually good if blood glucose is maintained within normal ranges using appropriate insulin dosage.However if treatment is not initiated the child can die due to complications
