Zainab Musa is an 11-month-old baby girl living with her parents and three siblings in a modest home. Despite her young age, she is lively and curious, always exploring her surroundings with wide-eyed wonder. Zainab developed a high-grade fever, body pain, persistent cough, and nasal congestion, which rendered her weak, irritable, and unable to feed or play. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, causing significant concern for her mother, who brought her to Nakowa for urgent medical attention. On presentation to our hospital, the patient underwent further evaluation and was diagnosed with malaria, enteric fever, and acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI)

Zainab Musa was placed on a structured treatment plan to manage her malaria with enteric fever and acute respiratory tract infection. She was given Syrup Lonart 5mls bd for 3 days to treat malaria, along with Syrup Paracetamol 5mls for 3 days to control fever. To combat the bacterial infection, she received Syrup Amoxicillin 5mls tds for 7 days, while Syrup Vitamin C 5mls tds for 2 weeks helped boost her immunity. For her respiratory symptoms, she was prescribed Syrup Piriton 5mls bd for 7 days. In addition, she was administered intramuscular Emal 20mg daily for 3 days and a single intramuscular dose of Paracetamol 100mg, supported with the use of sterile syringes. With this combination of medications, Zainab’s fever gradually subsided, her cough and congestion eased, and her appetite began to return. Over the course of treatment, she regained her energy, her abdominal pain lessened, and her breathing improved. By the end of her care, she had made a steady recovery, bringing great relief to her and her family who were overjoyed to see her health restored.

Zainab Musa prognosis is good with early diagnosis and proper treatment of malaria with enteric fever and acute respiratory tract infection. Most patients recover fully with appropriate medications, hydration, rest, and supportive care. However, delayed or inadequate management may result in complications such as severe anemia, intestinal perforation, or respiratory distress, which could significantly worsen the outcome.
