Maureen B., 14

Maureen, a 14-year-old girl from Salawa village, currently resides at Sunrise Children’s Home with her father and grandmother. Her mother’s whereabouts remain unknown. She had to drop out of school in Form 2 due to lack of school fees, although she is passionate about education and hopes to resume her studies. She learned about Helpster through Tionycare Hospital. Maureen had been well until three days ago when she developed fever, chest pain, and cough. Upon assessment, she was diagnosed with pneumonia .

Maureen began experiencing a high fever, chest pain, and a persistent cough that left her feeling weak and uncomfortable. Realizing her condition was getting worse, she decided to visit the hospital on her own to seek medical help. After a careful examination, the doctor diagnosed her with pneumonia, a lung infection that requires prompt treatment. Since her condition was stable, she was treated as an outpatient. The doctor prescribed ceftriaxone injections to fight the infection, along with amoxiclav, an oral antibiotic. She was also given dexamethasone to reduce inflammation in the lungs and paracetamol to manage the fever and chest pain. Maureen returned home the same day and followed her treatment plan carefully. Though she was managing alone, she took her medications on time, rested well, and stayed hydrated. Within a few days, her fever began to come down, her chest pain eased, and her cough improved. After completing her full course of treatment, Maureen made a full recovery and was able to return to her normal routine, healthy and strong once again.

Maureen was diagnosed with pneumonia then given the necessary treatment. She is in a fair general condition. She will fully recover once treatment is done. If pneumonia is left untreated, the infection can worsen and lead to serious health complications. The inflammation and fluid in the lungs can make it increasingly difficult to breathe, potentially causing respiratory failure. In some cases, the infection may spread to other parts of the body, leading to sepsis—a life-threatening condition. Untreated pneumonia can also result in lung abscesses, pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), or long-term damage to lung tissue. Children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially at risk. Without proper medical care, pneumonia can become severe and may even be fatal.
