Sudi Kiplagat is a 4-year-old boy residing in a children's home. He was rescued by the police after living on the streets, as his mother, who struggles with alcoholism, resides in the streets of town, while his father’s identity remains unknown. The children's home was introduced to Helpster through a site visit by Tionycare Hospital together with Helpster volunteer Vincent. Sudi was in good health until three days ago when he developed abdominal pain, headache, and a cough. He was examined, diagnosed, and received appropriate treatment. He is now feeling much better and is on the path to recovery.

Sudi began feeling unwell with abdominal pain, a headache, and a mild cough. As the discomfort worsened, he went to the clinic for evaluation. After a physical examination and a review of his symptoms, the doctor diagnosed him with gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines likely due to an infection. To help him recover, Sudi was prescribed paracetamol to relieve pain and reduce the headache, cefixime to treat any bacterial infection, loratadine for allergy-related symptoms such as the cough, and cyproheptadine to help with appetite and allergic reactions. Sudi followed his treatment carefully, took plenty of fluids, and rested at home. Within a few days, his abdominal pain eased, his appetite improved, and the headache and cough disappeared. After completing the full course of medication, Sudi fully recovered and returned to his normal activities feeling healthy and strong.

Sudi has been assessed and diagnosed and given the necessary treatment. He had severe dehydration which was treated early enough and his prognosis is good. If gastroenteritis is left untreated, especially in cases with frequent diarrhea and vomiting, it can lead to dehydration, which may become severe and dangerous—particularly in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Without enough fluids, the body can lose essential salts and electrolytes, leading to complications such as weakness, confusion, low blood pressure, kidney problems, or even shock in extreme cases. In bacterial or parasitic infections, untreated gastroenteritis may also worsen or spread, prolonging illness and increasing the risk of further health complications. Prompt rehydration and medical care are important to prevent these outcomes.
