Leila A., 1

Leila is the youngest child in her family and lives with her mother and brother in a single-room mud house. Her mother is unemployed, and the family has been depending on her grandmother, who worked in the local gold mines. However, the grandmother recently lost her job, leaving the family without a steady source of income. One night, Leila developed breathing difficulties and a high fever. The following morning, her mother rushed her to a nearby health facility, given her known history of sickle cell disease. She was stabilized there and later referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further management.

Leila was brought to the hospital with complaints of cough, irritability, difficulty in breathing, and body malaise. Being a known sickle cell patient, blood work was immediately sent to the lab, which revealed she was severely anemic. This warranted admission to the ward, where she received a blood transfusion and also administered IV paracetamol. She responded well to treatment and was duly discharged. A call t the grandmother revealed she was recuperating fine and was very jovial and playful.

Leila's was diagnosed with severe anaemia and promptly transfused; therefore, her prognosis is good, as the transfusion stabilized her and she is responding well to treatment
