Gloria N., 16

Gloria is a 16-year-old girl from a humble background, living with her mother who is a village tailor earning about KSh 1,600 per month to support Gloria and her three siblings. They reside in a small two-room mud house with a leaking roof and a cow-dung floor, and they fetch water from a stream 20 minutes away. Gloria is currently out of school but dreams of returning to pursue her education and one day become a lawyer. She enjoys reading novels and following national news. Recently, Gloria developed lower abdominal pain, painful urination, and per vaginal bleeding. Due to financial constraints, she could not seek care until her birth companion took her to Bokoli Sub-County Hospital. At first, she was referred to Helpster’s volunteer for support, after which she was assessed and enrolled for treatment. On examination, she presented with general body weakness, abdominal pain, fever, chills, and a productive cough. Laboratory tests were done (blood slide for malaria parasites, random blood sugar, full hemogram), and the doctor diagnosed a urinary tract infection and severe pneumonia in pregnancy. She was admitted for further management.

Gloria was diagnosed with urinary tract infection in pregnancy. She was given antibiotics and rehydrating fluids. As she started feeling better, she was admitted for inpatient care in maternity ward for pregnancy management to and was discharged after staying in the ward for 3 days and advised to continue with monthly check up .During the check-up call, the Helpster volunteer heard from a joyful mother that Gloria is now fully recovered and back to her normal life.

Prognosis is good. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, the prognosis of urinary tract infection and pneumonia in pregnancy is generally good. However, if untreated, it can progress to complications such as pyelonephritis, preterm labor, or low birth weight. Early management, as in Gloria’s case, leads to favorable recovery and safe pregnancy outcomes.
