Hauwa A., 10

Hauwa Audu is a bright, kind, and curious 10-year-old girl who loves drawing, reading, and playing with friends. She is hardworking in school and dreams of becoming a nurse or doctor so she can help others and care for the sick in her community. She developed a high fever and convulsions that led to loss of consciousness. Upon presentation at our hospital and after further evaluation, she was diagnosed with cerebral malaria or meningitis, complicated by aspiration pneumonia, and is currently critically ill under hospital care. She was unconscious at presentation with a GCS score of 5/15 hence urgent medical care was commenced.

Hauwa Audu was given antimalarial and antibiotic medications, along with fluids and supportive care to control fever and prevent further seizures. She responded gradually to treatment, regained consciousness after several days, and her breathing and strength improved. The outcome was favorable, and she is now recovering steadily under medical supervision.

This is extremely critical for 10-year-old Hauwa as she faces rapid deterioration from seizures, raised intracranial pressure, sepsis, and ARDS caused by the infections. Upon presentation she was unconscious. Hauwa prognosis is good with timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Full recovery is expected with expert and prompt management. However, if the illness is left untreated, it may progress to severe complications such as brain damage, coma, or even death.
