Keyeton Grace is a 1 year old child living in Makoko , a very impoverished area in Lagos state Nigeria. During the Meyiwavera medical outreach program, conducted in partnership with Helpster Charity in Makoko, children were being screened and Grace was one of those children. This type of community health initiative is crucial in underserved areas, as it can identify children who might otherwise go undiagnosed and untreated. Master Grace Keyeton, a 13-month-old male with HbSS, visited the hospital due to a wound breakdown that occurred a month after his abdominal surgery. Upon presentation at our hospital, further evaluations revealed he had surgical wound breakdown with ulcer in a child with sickle cell disease (HbSS) and with a very low hemoglobin hence anemic and quite in need of medical treatment.

Grace is a 22-month-old known HbSS patient who presented with a wound breakdown following abdominal surgery performed one month prior. The wound showed sloughing and a wound swab culture grew Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus and Acinetobacter Baumannii, requiring urgent antibiotic treatment. He was placed on Folic Acid, Vitamin B Complex, and Proguanil. Due to financial constraints, the patient was unable to return for follow-up, and efforts are ongoing to facilitate continued care

Grace is suffering from Sickle cell disease and has anemic with a hemoglobin of 8 and has a serious wound infection that requires urgent treatment. He has sickle cell disease with anemia (Hb 8.23) and a chronic post-surgical skin ulcer infected with bacteria. While his vital signs are stable and there is no malaria or urine infection, the wound infection needs intravenous antibiotics to prevent complications. With prompt treatment, proper wound care, and close follow-up, his condition can improve.
