Melvin L., 5

Melvin is a 5-year-old girl living with her grandmother in a rural area alongside eight other grandchildren. Her parents separated two years ago, after which her father took her to live with her grandmother. The family depends entirely on the grandmother, who is a small-scale farmer earning about Ksh 1,500 from selling farm produce such as kale. Recently, Melvin developed a persistent cough, high fever, and increasing difficulty in breathing, which worsened over several days. Concerned about her condition, her parents were advised by one of Helpster Charity’s beneficiaries to visit Bulondo Health Centre, where the organization supports vulnerable families with free medical care. At the facility, Melvin was examined and diagnosed with severe pneumonia - a serious lung infection requiring immediate attention. She was promptly started on oxygen therapy, intravenous antibiotics, and fluids, and placed under close medical supervision for ongoing treatment and recovery.

Melvin, a young child diagnosed with severe pneumonia, was taken to Bulondo Health Centre after experiencing persistent cough, high fever, and difficulty in breathing. Upon arrival, she was immediately started on treatment that included oxygen therapy to support her breathing, intravenous antibiotics to fight the infection, and fluids to keep her hydrated. The medical team monitored her closely until her breathing improved and fever subsided. After several days of treatment, Melvin showed great improvement—her strength returned, her breathing normalized, and she could eat and play again. Her full recovery was successful, thanks to the timely and quality care she received. Her family expressed deep appreciation to Helpster Charity Organization for providing free medical treatment, which saved Melvin’s life and eased the financial burden on her struggling parents.

Melvin’s prognosis is generally good, now that she is receiving appropriate medical care and we are hopeful that upon discharge, she completes her full course of treatment at home with the oral medication. Severe pneumonia can be life-threatening if untreated, but with timely intervention - such as oxygen therapy, intravenous antibiotics, and nutritional support like the one given to Melvin, most children recover fully.
