Hauwa A., 5

Hauwa is a young girl who likes playing with her friends. She was recently enrolled in school. Due to an ongoing issue between her parents, she is now being taken care of by her step mother who is not gainfully employed. Hauwa was apparently well until few days ago when she developed fever, headache, generalized body weakness and had several episodes of convulsion. Upon presentation at our hospital, and after further evaluation, she was diagnosed with Severe Malaria (Anemia + Prostration + Convulsion) R/O Acute Bacterial Meningitis.

Hauwa was admitted in our facility and managed as a case of Severe Malaria (Prostration + Anemia + Mild Anemia). She had her complete dosages of IV and Oral antimalarial and IV analgesics. She was also re-hydrated with IV fluids. As the treatment progressed, she responded well as evidenced by resolving of admitting symptoms. She was later discharged home with oral medications following the improvement of her condition.

Severe Malaria is an emergency condition which requires urgent treatment with parenteral Antimalarials and other life saving interventions as the presentation dictates. With timely and appropriate intervention, this patient has a chance of recovery, however, delay in treatment or inappropriate treatment can lead to detrimental outcomes like the loss of her life.
