Khadija M., 15

Khadija is a cheerful 15-year-old teenager who enjoys spending time with friends and assisting her mother with household chores. She comes from a loving family of six, consisting of her parents and three siblings. Khadija was previously healthy but developed severe abdominal pain three days ago. The pain started around her navel and spread, becoming persistent and severe, accompanied by high-grade fever, repeated vomiting (about 5 episodes), general weakness, and loss of appetite. After trying other treatment options without improvement, her parents rushed her to UMD. On presentation at our hospital, and after further clinical evaluation, she was diagnosed with ruptured appendicitis.

Khadija Muhammed, a 15-year-old female, presented with a sudden onset of right lower abdominal pain,nausea and vomiting for since 3 days.Pain is severe and constant often worsen with movement, associated with symptoms of loss of appetite and fever. After thorough evaluation, she was diagnosed with Acute appendicitis R/O Ruptured appendix.She underwent successful Ex.Lap surgery without immediate complications. Following a 3-day hospital stay for close monitoring and post-operative care, Khadija recovered well and was discharged home with a scheduled follow-up appointment for 1 week.She has since fully recovered and resumed regular activities. Ruptured appendix leads to collection of pus,fluid and blood into the abdomen and pelvic cavity causing abdominal distention, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting fever and sepsis and it's a life threatening condition. Prompt surgical intervention in this case will likely yield a positive outcome and prevent further complications, despite the appendix having already ruptured. With exploratory laparotomy and lavage and medications Khadija's condition is expected to significantly improve. Therefore emergency surgery where the abdomen is open to remove pus,debris and wash it with warm normal saline is the only resort to save her life at this moment.
