Zara, a 20 year-old girl from a low-income family, is the daughter of a plumber who struggles to make ends meet on a monthly income of ₦35,000. Despite the challenges, Zara is an easy-going individual who helps support her family by plaiting hair for extra income. Zara experienced sudden, severe lower abdominal pain that worsened with movement and was accompanied by nausea and vomiting. She was rushed to UMD Medical Clinic for help. Upon presentation at our hospital and after further evaluation she was diagnosed with acute right ovarian Torsion. She was scheduled for an emergency exploratory laparotomy.

Zara Bukar Mele, a 20-year-old female, was presented to our facility with severe lower abdominal pain that worsen with movement and was accompanied by nausea and vomiting. After thorough evaluation and investigation she was diagnosed with acute ovarian torsion.She underwent ovarian cystectomy. The surgery was successful without immediate complications. Due to the nature of her sickness, she was admitted for 5 days for close monitoring and treatment. The patient recovered well and was discharged home after 5 days, with follow-up care scheduled for 1 week. Currently,Zara is doing well, has recovered, and has resumed regular activities. Acute ovarian torsion can become life-threatening if left untreated, primarily due to the risk of severe systemic infection (sepsis) developing from necrotic (dead) ovarian tissue. While the condition itself is not typically fatal, the most dangerous complications arise from a lack of prompt, emergency medical treatment. Zara requires urgent surgery to alleviate the torsion and prevent complications. If left untreated, ovarian torsion can leads to ovarian necrosis, rupture, infection etc causing extreme pain and discomfort. There's also a risk of rupture, leading to severe pain, internal bleeding, and infection. Additionally, if the cyst is cancerous, delayed treatment could allow the cancer to advance, reducing the chances of successful treatment. Surgery may involve cyst removal (cystectomy) or, in severe cases, removal of the entire ovary (oophorectomy). The only solution to Fatima's condition is surgery,this will significantly improve her health status.
