Kelvin M., 10

Kelvin is a bright Grade 4 pupil from a humble background. He is the second-born in a family of five children, all of whom are orphans. They live with their mother in a small single room after losing their father a year ago, leaving their mother to care for the family on her own. Kelvin’s mother, Josephine, works as a small-scale farmer and also sells sugarcane to provide for her children. Each day, she walks long distances to buy sugarcane to resell, managing to earn only about 130 shillings a day - an amount that is far from enough for her family’s needs. Despite the hardships, Josephine does everything she can to ensure her children survive. One day, while helping his mother carry sugarcane, Kelvin was attacked and bitten by a dog. He was left helpless until a passing neighbor found him. Realizing the family had no means to afford medical care, the neighbor immediately contacted us for assistance. We advised them to bring Kelvin to the facility for treatment under Helpster Charity’s support. Kelvin arrived at our emergency department later that afternoon after the frightening dog attack. His family was visibly distressed as they rushed him in. Kelvin was in pain, bleeding, and deeply shaken by the ordeal. On rapid assessment, the medical team discovered multiple bite wounds, with the most severe injury affecting his scrotum - where the dog bite had caused extensive damage, leaving one testicle exposed. It was a critical and delicate case that required urgent attention. The emergency team acted immediately. Kelvin was stabilized, given pain medication, and his wounds were cleaned thoroughly. Because such injuries carry a very high risk of serious infections, he was promptly started on strong antibiotics and intensive wound care. Surgical specialists were urgently consulted to manage the exposed testis and provide the appropriate surgical intervention. Throughout the process, Kelvin showed remarkable courage despite the trauma he had experienced. Thanks to the swift and well-coordinated efforts of the emergency and surgical teams, the risk of infection was controlled, and he was taken for further treatment to repair the injuries. Kelvin’s healing journey has since begun, and with continued medical care, he is on a steady path toward recovery and regaining his strength after this terrifying incident.

Kelvin was brought in the facility with history of wild dog bite, he was in deep pain, bleeding, and deeply traumatized by what had happened. On examination he was diagnosed with wild dog bite wound. Was given; I v floxapen, i.v pcm among other drugs for treatment and management, he responded positively to medication and discharged on a stable condition.

Kelvin’s prognosis is favourable, especially because he received prompt emergency care, strong antibiotics, and early surgical intervention. The risk of life-threatening complications has significantly reduced due to the immediate treatment he received. With proper wound care, adherence to antibiotics, and continued follow-up with the surgical and paediatric teams, Kelvin is expected to make a good physical recovery. Healing of the bite wounds should progress well, and the exposed testicle, which has been managed by specialists, is likely to remain viable. Emotionally, Kelvin may experience temporary fear or trauma from the attack. With family support, reassurance, and a safe environment, his psychological recovery is also expected to be positive. Overall, Kelvin’s outlook is good.
