Liana is an infant whose mother is a Form Four school leaver currently residing at her parents’ homestead. As a single mother, she depends entirely on family support. Liana lives in a one-bedroom semi-permanent house shared with her mother, grandparents, and her mother’s eight siblings. The family’s livelihood depends mainly on Liana’s grandfather, who supports the household through irregular casual jobs within the community. Initially, Liana’s mother noticed that the baby was breastfeeding poorly, crying excessively, and experiencing intermittent fevers, which she assumed were normal infant behaviors. However, over the following days, Liana’s condition worsened, and she eventually stopped breastfeeding altogether. Remembering the guidance she had received during postnatal clinic visits—that refusal to breastfeed is a serious warning sign in infants—her mother grew increasingly concerned. She raised the issue with Liana’s grandparents, and her grandmother recalled seeing a poster at Helmi J. Jonas Health Centre about a charity organization that assists sick underprivileged children, especially when families lack financial means. With no money for transport, Liana’s mother tied the baby on her back and walked more than 10 kilometers to the hospital. By the time they arrived, Liana was extremely weak and in urgent need of medical attention.

LIANA RESPONDED WELL TO CARE AND MANAGEMENT SHE WAS GIVEN AS PER MEDICAL REPORT AND HER CONDITION IMPROVED MAKING US DISCHARGE HER ON ORAL DRUGS. FOLLOW UP VISIT CONDUCTED SHOWED THAT LIANA FULLY RECOVERED.

Liana's prognosis is fair. Liana was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by sepsis, a life-threatening condition that required urgent medical intervention. Although her presentation was advanced and she arrived in a weakened state, the establishment of a clear diagnosis and the prompt initiation of appropriate treatment significantly improve her chances of recovery. With intensive medical care, close monitoring, and strict adherence to the prescribed treatment regimen, Liana’s condition is expected to stabilize and gradually improve.
