Mustapha Q., 11

Mustapha is the last child in a family of five. He is a good boy who loves playing football, and his dream is to become a professional footballer. The entire family lives together in a one-room rented apartment. His father works as a commercial tricycle rider, while his mother sells food within their community. The mother’s estimated monthly income is ₦15,000, and the father earns about ₦35,000 per month. Mustapha presented to our hospital with history of inguinal swelling. The swelling was noticed 5 years and 6 months ago and since then it has been increasing in size, not associated with pain at the moment but causes discomfort and limits his activities. On evaluation, he was diagnosed with Left Inguinal Hernia.

Mustapha was admitted into our facility on the 11th of March 2026 with a diagnosis of Right Inguinoscrotal Hernia. He was scheduled for surgery and surgery was done successfully with no complications. He was monitored and wound reviewed, with good recovery he was discharged home on the 15th of March 2026 and given oral medications as take home drugs. He was seen as an outpatient but finally discharged and no longer reviewed from the 18th of March 2026. Mustapha and parent were very happy and thankful to Helpster Charity for the free surgery.

If Mustapha is left untreated, inguinal hernias can lead to complications such as bowel obstruction, strangulation (where blood supply to the herniated tissue is cut off), and significant pain or discomfort. Surgery is the most common treatment for inguinal hernias to repair the weakened area and prevent these potential complications.
