Diana M., 17

Diana is a 17-year-old Form Two student who lives with her family in a modest two-room house. Her parents are small-scale farmers earning about KSh 1,400 per month, making it difficult to meet the family’s basic needs. Despite these challenges, Diana is disciplined, humble, and hardworking. She remains committed to her education and is determined to change her family’s situation through academic success. She is respectful, responsible, and highly motivated. In her free time, she helps her parents with farm work, completes household chores, and studies diligently. Diana aspires to become a doctor so she can care for the sick, save lives, and support her family and community in the future. Diana’s illness began as a urinary tract infection that went untreated, eventually progressing to pyelonephritis. She initially experienced painful and frequent urination and lower abdominal discomfort. As the infection worsened, it spread to her kidneys, causing high fever, severe flank pain, vomiting, and profound weakness. Her family could not afford medical care. A neighbour passing by their home on the way to fetch water at the stream noticed Diana’s distress and advised the family to take her to Bulondo Health Centre, where Helpster Charity supports vulnerable patients. At the facility, Diana was examined, diagnosed with pyelonephritis, and started on appropriate antibiotics, fluids, and supportive treatment.

Diana was received at the health facility after being referred by a well-wisher and was diagnosed with urinary tract infection with pyelonephritis. Through the support of the Helpster Charity Organisation, she received free medical treatment, including proper investigations, antibiotic therapy, pain management, and fluids. She responded well to treatment, with reduction of fever, relief of pain, and improvement in her general condition. The infection was controlled, and she was discharged on medication with follow-up advice. Outcome: Diana is now stable and recovering well, with a good prognosis and reduced risk of future kidney complications due to timely intervention.

With timely treatment, Diana’s prognosis is very good. Pyelonephritis responds well to appropriate antibiotics, fluids, and supportive care, especially when managed early after diagnosis. As her fever settles, pain reduces, and she regains strength, she is expected to recover fully. To prevent recurrence, it will be important for Diana to complete her full course of antibiotics, stay well hydrated, and attend follow-up reviews.
