Elnathan a 4mo male infant is the third child among three children, the parents have been struggling with the family because of finances. They live in a 2 rooms apartment, they make use of water from the well for their daily activities, they have access to electricity but not always. Elnathan started having fever, mucoid watery stool, poor appetite, weight loss, noisy breathing. Patient’s illness started about a week ago with mild fever and mucoid watery stool twice a day. Appetite was poor and body loss weight. Two days before presentation mother noticed high grade fever and worsening general condition, she gave the baby zinc oxide and water. (Not on exclusive breastfeeding). No vomiting or cough. On examination, a 4month old male infant warm to touch (37.5o C), uniteric, acyanosed, irritable and restless. Tachypneic and has tachycardia. No bowel sounds heard. They parents cannot pay the medical bills that is why they contacted Helpster Charity through a volunteer. The child was evaluated and diagnosed with respiratory tract infection and severe malaria.

On examination, a 4month old male infant warm to touch (37.5o C), uniteric, acyanosed, irritable and restless. Tachypneic and has tachycardia. No bowel sounds heard. Treatment commenced with injection antimalarials, antibiotics and other supportive care, patient did well and was stable, temperature was normalized, coughing stopped, crying stopped and feeding continued well. Patient is to return for follow up after a period of 1 week. The family are happy for saving their child and sends appreciation to Helpster Charity for the medical support.

For Elnathan a 4-month-old male infant, co-infection of severe malaria and respiratory tract infection was quite critical. the prognosis is for him to have an early treatment started. With prompt hospital care, he will recover well from respiratory tract infections and severe malaria. If treated early with the right medicines, oxygen, and fluids have a good chance of survival. However, delays in treatment can lead to serious complications because he have weaker immunity for his age. With close monitoring, good nutrition, and follow-up care, he will go on to grow and develop normally.
