Background

Abdulhamid is 5yo male child currently living with his parents. He is the last child among 8 children. The parents are struggling to provide for the family due to financial constraints. The father is laborer and the mother is a house wife. They are are living in a 3 rooms apartment having a pit toilet. The make use of water from the well for their daily activities, they don't have access to electricity. Abdulhamid a 5-year-old male child presented to Albishir facility with complaints of abdominal pain, back pain, chest pain and crying. Mother also noticed he has been rejecting food for two days. On examination, child is febrile with temperature 39.2 degree Celsius, ill looking and restless, swelling on the arm and face. After thorough examination and investigations, he was diagnosed with bone crisis in sickle cell disease and in severe painful distress. The family cannot afford their medical bills that is they reached out to Helpster volunteer, and he brought to Albishir for free medical treatment under Helpster Charity.

Medical history

Abdulhamid a 5-year-old male child presented with complaints of abdominal pain, back pain, chest pain and crying. Mother also noticed he has been rejecting food for two days. On examination, child is febrile with temperature 39.2 degree Celsius, ill looking and restless, swelling on the arm and face. He was diagnosed with bone crisis in sickle cell disease. Treatment commenced to relieve patient pain with some analgesics like diclofenac, he was on transfusion due to rejection food and loss fluid, some antimalarials, antibiotics and other supportive care were administered. Patient was stabilized and pains seized, no more swelling on the face and arm, no more complaints of abdominal pain nor any organ pain. He was discharged. Family are happy and grateful to Helpster Charity for saving their child. Patient is to return for follow up after a period of 1 week.

Outcome

For Abdulhamid who is a 5-year-old boy with sickle cell disease experiencing a bone crisis, which is causing severe pain and distress to the young child. Treatment includes strong pain relief, adequate hydration, oxygen if needed, and treating triggers. Prevention focuses on hydroxyurea, hydration, and infection control. The prognosis of bone crisis in SCD depends on prompt treatment. Most children respond well to pain medicines, fluids, and rest, and symptoms usually improve within a few days. At this age, close monitoring is important to rule out infection and prevent complications. With regular follow-up, vaccinations, prophylactic antibiotics, good hydration, and medicines like hydroxyurea when indicated. Currently, Abdulhamid has been stabilized.
