Mamman A., 2

Mamman is a calm and friendly 2-year-old child who smiles easily, even at strangers. His parents are small-scale farmers and petty traders who work hard to support their family with limited resources. He was brought by his mother with a left scrotal swelling first noticed at about 5 months of age, which has gradually increased in size over time. The swelling is now causing discomfort with occasional tenderness, prompting his presentation for medical care. He was diagnosed with big and severely painful inguinoscrotal hernia and requires surgical intervention (herniotomy)

Mamman was brought to our facility with complaint of left scrotal swelling which was said to be noticed when he was 5 months, initially small around the groin but gradually progressed to become giant and involves the scrotum. After evaluation, he was diagnosed with giant inguinoscrotal hernia on account of which he had surgery done where the defect was repaired. His postoperative period was satisfactory as no complication was noted. He was then discharged home with oral medications to complete his recovery and return to his normal premorbid condition.

Mamman's condition is curable with surgical intervention(Herniotomy)where the contents of the hernia are reduced and the defect is closed. Herniotomy is a common surgical procedure and has a very good prognosis. With the surgery, the patient has a good prognosis, while delay in treatment may lead to obstruction or strangulation potentially leading to ischaemia and necrosis of the bowel.
