Amina A., 8

Amina is an 8-year-old female child living with her parents. Her father is unemployed, her mother is a housewife, and due to financial hardship, most of the children in the family have dropped out of school. The family lives in a three-room apartment that often leaks during rainfall and has a pit toilet, a well, and no access to electricity. Amina attends a free government school and hopes to become a medical doctor. She presented with deformity of the right hand following a scald burn sustained seven years ago, which was managed at home with traditional medicine due to lack of funds. The injury healed after six weeks but resulted in post-burn flexion contracture of digits 3 to 5, making it difficult for her to write or perform daily activities. On examination, she was not pale, afebrile, anicteric, and well hydrated. She was diagnosed with post-burn flexion contracture of the right hand and requires contracture release with full-thickness skin grafting, followed by wound care and physiotherapy. The family is unable to afford medical bills and has contacted Helpster Charity for support.

Amina, an 8yo female child, had a successful surgery done at our facility to release the affected digits which healed up after 6 weeks prior to post burn injury. Patient was admitted in the ward to recuperate, have wound dressing and be closely monitored. Following a positive response to treatment, patient was discharged with some medications to take home, Amina's family are happy because their child will be able to write well and do some other activities with her digits. They appreciate the entire team.

Amina will be unable to do anything with this hand till the surgical correction is done and this will keep impacting the quality of her life as she grows up. The prognosis for an 8-year-old school girl with post-burn flexion contracture of the digits is generally good with timely treatment. Surgical release and consistent physiotherapy can restore hand function, improve finger mobility, and allow normal school activities. Early rehabilitation reduces recurrence and supports long-term functional and psychosocial recovery.
