Maryam M., 3

Maryam is a girl child of 3yo living with her single mother and siblings. She is last child of the family. The mother got separated from the husband and mother have been the only one struggling to provide for Maryam and her other siblings. They live in a 2 rooms apartment having a pit toilet, a well in the compound and without access to electricity. Maryam, a 3yo female presented with the complaints of fever, abdominal pain, anorexia, weight loss, cough and rhinorrhea which started 3 days ago simultaneously and became worse with complete loss of appetite. She is also coughing with nasal discharge and noisy breathing especially at night. On examination, a young female child, 3yo, looking very ill, febrile with temperature 37.8o C, acyanosed but not pale. Tachypneic, intercostal recessions. She was diagnosed with Sever Malaria and Pneumonia requiring urgent medical treatment. The single mother cannot afford to pay for the medical bills, they seek help from Helpster Charity through a volunteer.

She is also coughing with nasal discharge and noisy breathing especially at night. On examination, a young female child, 3yo, looking very ill, febrile with temperature 37.8o C, acyanosed but not pale. Tachypneic, intercostal recessions. She was diagnosed with sever malaria and pneumonia. Treatment commenced immediately was admitted. She was administered injection antimalarials, injection antibiotics and other supportive care, patient became stable, temperature was normalised, no more fever and coughs, eating continued well. She was discharged with oral medications and was scheduled for follow up in a week time. Family are so happy for the medical support from Helpster Charity and they extended their appreciation.

With early diagnosis and prompt treatment, the prognosis for Maryam a 3-year-old girl with severe malaria and pneumonia is generally good. Rapid antimalarial therapy, appropriate antibiotics, oxygen support, and close monitoring reduce complications. Delayed care may lead to anemia, respiratory failure, prolonged hospitalization, or increased risk of mortality. Maryam received a very good management and is recovering quite well.
