Mst. Romana Begum is a 19-year-old pregnant woman who lives with her husband, a poor farmer, in a modest rural household. As the only earning member, her husband’s small and uncertain income is barely enough to manage daily expenses, leaving them unable to afford emergency surgery and advanced medical care. Despite severe abdominal pain and her critical condition at 38 weeks of pregnancy, Romana remains strong and hopeful for the safe birth of her first child. Doctors at Jamuna Clinic diagnosed her with a ruptured appendicitis along with low amniotic fluid, a life-threatening situation for both mother and baby. Without urgent surgical intervention, the infection could spread rapidly, putting her life and her unborn child at serious risk, which is why her husband sought help from Helpster through Dr. Mahfifa Akter and Volunteer Bablu Abdullah.

Mst. Romana Begum was admitted to the hospital on February 01, 2026, with right-sided abdominal pain at 38 weeks of her first pregnancy. After medical evaluation, she was diagnosed with burst appendicitis and oligohydramnios. On the same day, the attending doctors successfully performed an appendectomy along with a lower uterine cesarean section (LUCS). Following surgery, both mother and newborn remained in good condition. After six days of postoperative care, she was discharged on February 06, 2026, in good health. At the time of discharge, her husband and mother came to the hospital to receive her. The family expressed their sincere gratitude to Helpster, Jamuna Clinic, and Md. Doctors have advised urgent laparotomy with removal of the ruptured appendix, thorough cleaning of the abdominal infection, along with LUCS to safely deliver the baby. With timely surgery, the infection can be controlled, the mother’s life can be saved, and the baby can be delivered safely despite the breech position. Successful treatment will allow Romana Begum to recover fully and care for her newborn and family. However, if this treatment is not done immediately, the infection from the burst appendix can spread throughout her body, leading to severe blood infection (sepsis), organ failure, or death. The unborn baby is also at high risk of distress or death, making this combined surgery absolutely life-saving for both mother and child.
