Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.

That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Elisha is a 7-year-old boy living with his parents in a remote rural village. He is an active and curious child who enjoys reading and learning new things. Despite the challenges, he remains determined and shows a strong interest in education. Elisha dreams of becoming a doctor so he can serve his community and improve people’s health. With adequate support in healthcare, encouragement, and access to education, he has great potential to achieve his goals. Elisha was brought to the hospital with a sudden swelling in the right groin area that had progressively worsened over 24 hours. Initially, the swelling was reducible, but it later became irreducible and very painful. This was accompanied by persistent crying, refusal to feed, vomiting, abdominal distension, and inability to pass stool or gas, raising concern for intestinal obstruction. A diagnosis of strangulated right inguinal hernia was made, and he was prepared for emergency surgical intervention. The family learned about Helpster Charity through a community health promoter, who guided them to seek support for his care.

Medical history

Elisha came to the facility with history of sudden onset swelling in the right groin region, which had become progressively painful over the preceding 24 hours. The swelling was initially reducible but later became irreducible and markedly tender. This was associated with persistent crying, refusal to feed, and episodes of vomiting. The caregivers also reported abdominal distension and failure to pass stool and flatus, raising concern for intestinal obstruction. Elisha was closely monitored and showed steady improvement. He tolerated feeds well, regained normal bowel function, and his pain was effectively managed. The surgical wound healed without complications, and he was discharged in stable condition

Treatment & Outcomes

Elisha presented with a strangulated right inguinal hernia, a surgical emergency where the blood supply to the herniated bowel is compromised. His symptoms of severe pain, irreducible swelling, vomiting, abdominal distension, and inability to pass stool indicated intestinal obstruction with risk of bowel damage. The decision to proceed with emergency surgical intervention was timely and appropriate to prevent complications such as bowel necrosis, perforation, and sepsis. Elisha’s prognosis is good, given the prompt diagnosis and timely surgical management. With proper post-operative care, wound management, and follow-up, he is expected to regain full health
