Background

Aisha is a 12 year old female child who resides in a remote area in the city of Bauchi State. She is currently staying with her parents. She attends a government school and wishes to be a successful business woman. The mother is a house wife and the father is a security guard. The wages doesn't take care of the household at all. They stay in a 2 rooms apartment having a pit latrine, borehole and no access to electricity. Patient’s illness started 3 days ago with headache, abdominal pain, high grade constant fever associated with vomiting, loss of appetite and epigastric pain (which is relieved by vomiting). Two days ago, the solera turned yellowish including urine. Her stools became watery with the appearance of malting. She became dyspnea on exertion and experiences palpitations and insomia On examination, a young female teenager, febrile (38.7oC), wasted and very ill looking, jaundiced, very weak, palor, wasted, tachypneic with tachycardia, epigastric tenderness. She was diagnosed with severe Enteritis, Malaria, and Anemia. The family are poor and could not afford the medical bills that made them to con tact Helpster Charity, she was admitted and evaluated properly.

Medical history

Patient’s illness started 3 days ago with headache, abdominal pain, high grade constant fever associated with vomiting, loss of appetite and epigastric pain (which is relieved by vomiting). Two days ago, the solera turned yellowish including urine. Her stools became watery with the appearance of malting. She became dyspnea on exertion and experiences palpitations and insomia On examination, a young female teenager, febrile (38.7oC), wasted and very ill looking, jaundiced, very weak, palor, wasted, tachypneic with tachycardia, epigastric tenderness. She was diagnosed with severe Enteritis, Malaria, and Anemia. She was immediately admitted and commenced treatment with injection antimalarials, injection antibiotics, antipyretics, infusion and other supportive care, patient became stable, fever stopped, strength was regained and eventually discharge. She was placed on home medication and advised on her regular diet. Patient is to return for follow up after 1 week. The family are thankful to Helpster Charity for the medical support.

Prognosis

Aisha is having Severe Enteritis, Malaria, and Anemia, she is quite sick She has profuse diarrhea, vomiting, can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and poor nutrient absorption. She presents with high-grade fever, chills, vomiting, and can progress to complications like cerebral involvement. Combined, these conditions increase morbidity, leading to weakness, poor feeding, and risk of shock. The prognosis of severe Enteritis, Malaria, and Anemia is guarded to good, depending on severity and timeliness of treatment, as Aisha was diagnosed, she was given prompt management which includes antimalarials, fluid resuscitation, correction of anemia, electrolyte balance, and treatment of underlying infections. She was admitted to recuperate until she was fully recovered and discharged.
