Background

Umar is a 3 year old male child, the 4th among three siblings. He lives with his family members in a small community in Bauchi State. The father is not currently having a payable job and the mother is a house wife. Getting money in the family is very difficult as they always struggle to feed. The children have stopped going to school due to financial constraints. They are living in a 2 rooms apartment, they have a pit toilet. They make use of water from the well for their daily activities. No access to electricity and barely managing with little or no income. Umar is a 3-year-old male child who presented with complaints of fever, body swelling, fast breathing and sleep disturbances at night. There is cough and fast breathing especially at night. Child refused food even when forced by the mother. On examination, a male child looking very ill with temperature 38oC, anicteric, acaynosed, palor, tachypneic, not jaundiced. He was properly evaluated and diagnosed with severe Enteric fever and Malaria. They family are poor and in need of medical assistance that is they were asked to come to Albishir for them to get medical support from Helpster Charity.

Medical history

Umar, a 3-year-old male child who presented with complaints of fever, body swelling, fast breathing and sleep disturbances at night. There is cough and fast breathing especially at night. Child refused food even when forced by the mother. On examination, a male child looking very ill with temperature 38oC, unicteric, acaynosed, palor, tachypneic, not jaundiced. He was diagnosed with severe Enteric fever and Malaria. Management of patient was commenced with injection antimalarials, injection antibiotics, IV fluids and other supportive care. Patient was stabilized, temperature was normalized, feeding continued and child was discharged with some home medications. He is to return for follow up after five days. The family look overjoyed by the medical support they received and care gotten by the medical team. They extended gratitude to all for the medical help.

Prognosis

Umar was diagnosed with severe enteric fever (Typhoid) and malaria causing ill health and is life-threatening hence he needed urgent medical attention. He was diagnosed with severe enteric fever and malaria. Management includes prompt antimalarial therapy, appropriate antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, nutritional support, and close monitoring to prevent complications and improve outcomes. Prognosis is good with early diagnosis, appropriate and prompt treatment.
