Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.
That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Joshua is a one-year-old boy and the second-born in a family of two children. His mother depends on small-scale farming to support the family, earning a monthly income that rarely exceeds Kshs 2,900. The family lives in a single-room rental house and relies on water fetched from a nearby well for domestic use. Over the past two days, Joshua developed high fever, persistent vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, and excessive body hotness. His condition progressively worsened, and he became weak, irritable, unable to feed properly, and visibly dehydrated. His mother was deeply concerned but financially unable to afford medical treatment for him. Fortunately, one of their neighbours, whose daughter had previously benefited from support through Helpster Charity, advised Joshua’s mother to take him to Mechimeru Health Centre for free medical care under the charity program. Upon medical evaluation, Joshua was diagnosed with severe malaria and severe dehydration. Prompt treatment was initiated.

Medical history

The treatment process for Joshua’s severe malaria involves urgent hospital care where he is given antimalarial medications, often starting with intravenous drugs if his condition is serious, followed by oral medication once he stabilizes. He is also given fluids to prevent dehydration, medication to reduce fever, and close monitoring of his vital signs to ensure his condition improves. In some cases, oxygen support or blood transfusion may be needed if complications such as severe anaemia develop. With timely and proper treatment, Joshua is expected to recover well, with his fever and other symptoms gradually reducing, and he can regain strength and return to normal daily activities after a short recovery period.

Outcome

Following medical evaluation, Joshua was diagnosed with severe malaria and severe dehydration. Doctors noted that his persistent fever, repeated vomiting, weakness, poor feeding, and signs of dehydration indicated a serious illness requiring immediate treatment. Prompt management, including antimalarial medication, fluid replacement, and close monitoring, was initiated. Joshua responded positively to treatment and gradually became more stable. With continued medication adherence, proper hydration, nutrition, and follow-up care, his prognosis is good, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
