Oscar W., 11

Oscar is an 11-year-old boy in Grade 3 at a remote public school. His education was delayed by poverty and lack of parental support. He is the third born in a family of nine children and has been raised by his elderly grandmother since the age of two, as the whereabouts of his parents remain unknown. The grandmother survives through small-scale farming and selling bananas, earning very little income to support the large household. The family lives in a modest two-room house without electricity and often struggles to meet basic needs. Despite these hardships, Oscar is respectful, hardworking, and committed to his education. He enjoys helping in the family garden, playing football, and singing with friends. He dreams of becoming a teacher and helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Oscar was brought to Bulondo Health Centre after five days of persistent illness characterized by repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, high fever, chest pain, and profound weakness. His condition worsened progressively, leaving him unable to retain food or medication. Due to financial constraints, his grandmother initially sought alternative remedies, but there was no improvement.

Oscar was admitted to the hospital with severe pneumonia and severe malaria after presenting with high fever, difficulty in breathing, persistent cough, body weakness, poor appetite, and general malaise. Following medical assessment and investigations, he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and severe malaria and immediately started on treatment. He received appropriate antimalarial medication, antibiotics, fever-reducing drugs, intravenous fluids, and supportive nursing care. His breathing and vital signs were closely monitored throughout admission, and he was also given nutritional support to aid recovery. As treatment continued, his fever reduced, breathing improved, cough decreased, and he gradually regained strength and appetite. With the support of Helpster Charity Organization, Oscar was able to access free medical treatment and hospitalization despite the family’s financial difficulties. After showing significant improvement and becoming clinically stable, he was discharged home with medication and follow-up advice.

Oscar was diagnosed with severe malaria and severe pneumonia after presenting with persistent fever, repeated vomiting, chest pain, abdominal pain, and marked weakness. These conditions required urgent admission, intravenous antimalarial medication, antibiotics, fluids, and close monitoring due to the risk of respiratory complications and further clinical deterioration. Following initiation of treatment, his fever has reduced, oral intake has improved, and his strength is gradually returning. While his illness was severe at presentation, the response to therapy has been satisfactory. Continued inpatient care and completion of treatment are expected to support progressive recovery and restoration of normal health.
