Baby Faith Nanjala is the first-born child of teenage parents who completed secondary school one year ago and are currently living together as a young family. They reside in a rented one-room mud-walled house with poor living conditions and have struggled to pay rent for the past two months due to financial hardship. During pregnancy, Baby Faith’s mother experienced dizziness, fatigue, and headaches after missing her menstrual period. She sought care at Matibabu Hospital, where pregnancy was confirmed and she was advised to attend regular ANC clinics, which she consistently did. However, in her fifth month of pregnancy, she developed weakness and severe discomfort and returned to the hospital for further assessment. Medical evaluation revealed premature labour requiring urgent medical intervention. She successfully delivered Baby Faith Nanjala prematurely, after which both mother and baby were referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for specialized care. Due to complications related to prematurity, the baby was admitted to the Newborn Unit.

Baby Faith was born prematurely with a low birth weight and was admitted to the Newborn Unit (NBU) for specialized care. She received treatment with X-Pen, gentamicin, and dextrose, and responded well to management. During admission, her weight improved from 1270g to 1800g. She was discharged in stable condition on oral medications/feeds, with advice for regular follow-up and monitoring of growth and wellbeing.

The prognosis of a premature newborn with low birth weight and Respiratory Distress Syndrome is guarded but can be favorable with timely and appropriate medical care. Baby Faith was promptly admitted to the new born unit, where she received prompt medical intervention and is expected to make a full recovery.
