Elizabeth A., 21

Elizabeth is the firstborn in a family of three children and a Form Four student at Segere Secondary School, where she was preparing for her KCSE examinations before temporarily leaving school due to pregnancy. Despite the setback, she hopes to continue her education and become a nurse in the future. She lives with her mother, siblings, and maternal grandmother in a small two-roomed mud-walled house under difficult financial conditions. Since her parents separated when she was in primary school, her mother, a casual laborer, has struggled alone to provide for the family. Elizabeth discovered she was pregnant after experiencing dizziness, headaches, and social withdrawal. Although initially discouraged by peers, she chose to keep the pregnancy with support from her mother. She consistently attended ANC clinics at a nearby dispensary despite financial hardship. During labour, she was accompanied by the area Community Health Promoter to access safe maternal care. Due to fetal distress, Elizabeth underwent an emergency Caesarean section.

Elizabeth came to the hospital with complaints of nausea, vomiting, headache , fatigue and abdominal pains. She was diagnosed with obstructed labour and required emergency caesarean surgery. She was taken for an emergency caesarean surgery, the surgery was a success and she was taken to the post -op ward. While in the ward she was administered pcm, tranexamic,flagyl,Cef among other drugs. The dressing on her surgical site was removed after 72 hrs. She was able to respond well to medication, she was eventually discharged on orals. A follow up clinic was booked for her to ensure she was healing well.

An emergency C-section is required to address non-reassuring fetal status and prevent the spread of maternal infection from an active UTI. While the prognosis for both mother and baby is generally excellent with prompt intervention, the mother faces a higher risk of post-operative infection, necessitating immediate and continued IV antibiotic treatments.Elizabeth was promptly admitted and successfully underwent emergency cesarian surgery.She is expected to recover well physically from the surgery with a low risk of long-term complications. Clinic booked to check on her progress.
