Brenda A., 17

Brenda is the second-born in a family of two children and is currently in Grade Ten, while her brother is in Form Three. She was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother after her parents separated when she was very young. Her father later remarried, and the family has since lived under difficult economic conditions in a one-roomed mud-walled house. Their situation worsened after Brenda’s mother left Nairobi in search of work and later became unreachable, leaving the children under the care of their grandmother, a peasant farmer. Despite these challenges, Brenda remained focused on her studies and dreams of becoming a doctor to help others and improve her family’s living conditions. Her life became more difficult when she missed her periods for three months and developed dizziness and weakness. At Ambira Sub County Hospital, tests confirmed she was pregnant, which affected her emotionally. She attended ANC clinics for four months before stopping due to financial difficulties and lack of medical insurance. During labour, complications developed, leading to referral from Ambira Sub County Hospital to Siaya County Referral Hospital for specialized care.

Brenda came to the hospital with complaints of nausea, vomiting and abdominal pains. She was diagnosed with obstructed labour and required emergency caesarean surgery. She was taken for an emergency caesarean surgery, the surgery was a success and she was taken to the post -op ward. While in the ward she was administered pcm, tranexamic,flagyl,Cef among other drugs. Her catheter was removed after 2 days, and ambulation encouraged. The dressing on her surgical site was removed after 72 hrs. She was able to respond well to medication, she was eventually discharged on orals. A follow up clinic was booked for her to ensure she was healing well.

Emergency CS for obstructed labour a life-saving operation for both mother and baby. Prognosis is usually good if treatment is done early and proper postoperative care is given. Delayed treatment may cause complications such as infection, excessive bleeding,Obstetric fistula, or baby oxygen deprivation. Brenda was promptly admitted and successfully underwent emergency cesarian surgery.She is expected to make full recovery post operative care.
