Vivian Awino O., 21

Vivian is a young mother of two children. She is the last born in a family of six children. Her mother is a housewife while her father survives through small-scale farming. Due to financial difficulties faced by the family, Vivian dropped out of school in Standard Eight due to lack of school fees. Her spouse works as a casual laborer and is the sole provider for the family, while Vivian remains a full-time housewife. Despite these hardships, she is hardworking and hopeful, enjoys sewing during her free time, and dreams of becoming a salonist to improve her family’s future. Vivian did not suspect pregnancy because she was using family planning and had missed her periods for several months, which she believed was medication-related. During a routine hospital visit, she was unexpectedly informed that she was pregnant and attending ANC clinics regularly. As delivery approached, she presented at Yala Sub-County Hospital where she was advised to undergo Caesarean section, but she did not have the money for that. She later sought care at Siaya Referral Hospital, where examination in labour ward revealed signs suggestive of uterine rupture, necessitating an emergency Caesarean section.

Vivian came to the hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain; she came as a self referral from Yala sub county Hospital.Vivian had her baby through caesarean means. The surgery went well, and she did not suffer any postoperative complications. She was later discharged on orals. A call to Vivian revealed that she had since recovered, her scar was healed, and she could also help her husband with some lighter duties like washing plates.

The prognosis following an emergency caesarean section for uterine rupture is guarded and depends on the extent of the tear, the amount of blood loss, the speed of surgical intervention, and the mother's condition at presentation. Vivian underwent a successful surgery and with good post operation management she is expected to make a full recovery
