Meshack O., 15

Meshack is a 15-year-old boy and the firstborn in a family of eight children. He lives with both of his parents and siblings in a modest three-room house. He enjoys playing football and drawing during his free time and dreams of becoming a doctor in the future. His parents are small-scale farmers who rely on proceeds from their farm produce to support the large family, often struggling to meet all their household needs. Four days before seeking medical attention, Meshack began experiencing epigastric pain, nausea, heartburn, vomiting, headaches, and generalized body aches. He informed his parents about his illness, but due to financial constraints, they were unable to take him to a health facility. Despite feeling unwell, he continued attending school. However, on the day he presented to the hospital, his condition worsened significantly while at school, prompting one of his teachers to pay for his transport to the health facility. His parents were contacted and consented to his treatment. The following day, his father visited him and expressed concern about the hospital bill, requesting an early discharge because he could not afford the cost of care. Meshack was diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease complicated by septicaemia, indicating that he had both a significant gastrointestinal condition and a serious systemic infection. His symptoms, including severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and general body weakness, required prompt medical intervention and close monitoring. Septicaemia can rapidly become life-threatening if left untreated, while peptic ulcer disease may lead to complications such as bleeding or perforation. Fortunately, Meshack presented to the hospital and was started on appropriate treatment. His prognosis is cautiously favorable
