Zainab A., 19

Zainab is a 19-year-old girl from Girgir Village. She is the second-born child in a family of local farmers who work tirelessly to provide for their children. Despite their hard work, the family survives on an average income of only ₦4,300, making it difficult to meet their daily needs. She was taken to the hospital after several days of fever, weakness headache, loss of appetite fatigue etc. Laboratory investigations revealed severe malaria complicated with severe anemia.

Upon admission, Zainab was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by severe anaemia, requiring urgent treatment and close monitoring. She was commenced on intravenous Artesunate to rapidly treat the malaria infection, alongside Paracetamol for fever and discomfort and intravenous fluids to maintain adequate hydration. Due to her severely reduced haemoglobin level, Zainab received a blood transfusion to improve her red blood cell count and oxygen delivery. She was also started on Ferrous Sulfate and Folic Acid to support blood production and recovery. As her condition improved and she tolerated oral medication, she completed treatment with an appropriate Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT), such as Artemether-Lumefantrine. Zainab responded well to treatment, with resolution of fever, improved strength, and gradual improvement in her haemoglobin level. She was discharged in stable condition with medication, nutritional advice, malaria prevention counselling, and follow-up instructions.

Doctor’s Opinion and Prognosis Zainab's condition on admission was critical, as she was diagnosed with Severe Malaria Complicated by Severe Anemia, a potentially life-threatening illness that required urgent medical attention. Severe malaria can rapidly affect multiple organs, while severe anemia significantly reduces the body's ability to deliver oxygen to tissues and vital organs. The medical team acted promptly to stabilize her condition, treat the malaria infection, and correct the anemia. With appropriate treatment, close monitoring, and supportive care, Zainab showed encouraging signs of recovery. Her prognosis is considered good, provided she completes her treatment, attends follow-up appointments, maintains adequate nutrition, and takes preventive measures against future malaria infections. While severe malaria and severe anemia can be fatal if left untreated, timely intervention greatly improved her chances of a full recovery without long-term complications.
