Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.
That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Amina is a 4-year-old girl living in Tajuwa Village with her parents and two siblings. She comes from a very low-income household struggling to meet basic needs. Her father, Musa, is visually impaired and survives by begging to support the family’s daily feeding, while her mother, Patsuma, sells cooked food and earns about ₦5,500, which is barely enough for their survival. The family lives in very poor conditions, facing constant hardship and uncertainty. Despite their struggles, the parents try their best to care for their children and provide at least one meal a day. When Amina fell seriously ill, the family was unable to afford proper medical treatment. Her condition placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on the household. was brought to the hospital with a history of high fever, severe weakness, loss of appetite, and persistent tiredness. Her parents noticed that she had become unusually weak, less playful, and appeared pale. As her condition worsened, she developed difficulty carrying out normal activities and required urgent medical attention. Following clinical assessment and laboratory investigations, Amina was diagnosed with Severe Malaria Complicated by Anemia.

Medical history

Amina was admitted as an emergency case and promptly stabilized. She was commenced on intravenous Artesunate for severe malaria and later completed a full course of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) once her condition improved and she could tolerate oral medication. She received intravenous fluids to correct dehydration and maintain adequate circulation, with close monitoring of her temperature, pulse, and respiratory status. Due to associated anaemia, she was given iron supplements and Folic Acid to support blood production and improve her strength. Paracetamol was administered to control fever and relieve discomfort, while nutritional support was provided to aid recovery. By discharge, Amina was clinically stable and recovering well. Her caregivers were counselled on completing all prescribed medications, maintaining adequate nutrition and hydration, preventing malaria, and attending follow-up appointments. She was discharged in stable condition with a favorable outlook for full recovery.

Prognosis

Doctor’s Opinion and Prognosis Amina was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by anemia, a serious pediatric condition that required urgent medical attention. The malaria infection caused significant destruction of red blood cells, resulting in anemia, which led to weakness, paleness, fatigue, and reduced physical activity. Given her young age, the condition posed a significant risk to her health and could have progressed to life-threatening complications if treatment had been delayed. She was promptly admitted and commenced on appropriate antimalarial therapy, supportive care, and treatment for anemia. Amina responded well to treatment, with gradual improvement in her fever, appetite, strength, and overall condition. Her blood levels improved, and she became more active as her recovery progressed. The prognosis is good due to the timely diagnosis and effective medical intervention. With completion of treatment, proper nutrition, and regular follow-up care, Amina is expected to make a full recovery and continue her normal growth and development.
