Metrine Nasimiyu W., 1

Metrine is a cheerful and playful 1-year-old girl living with her mother and siblings in a rural area. The family lives in a two-room mud house with an unfinished separate kitchen and uses a pit latrine. They walk about 20 minutes to collect drinking water from a stream. Her mother is the sole breadwinner, earning a limited income from selling vegetables, and when business is poor, the family sometimes depends on support from church members to meet basic needs. Metrine was brought to Kory Family Hospital while acutely unwell with cough, rapid and difficult breathing, bluish discoloration (cyanosis) and chest indrawing. Examination showed severe respiratory distress, markedly increased breathing rate, low blood oxygen levels, bronchial breath sounds and coarse crackles in the lungs. These findings were consistent with severe pneumonia. Due to significant breathing difficulty and inadequate oxygenation, Metrine required immediate admission for urgent treatment, oxygen support where indicated and close monitoring to prevent further deterioration.

Metrine was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with Severe Pneumonia. During her admission, she received prompt medical treatment, including antibiotics to treat the lung infection, oxygen therapy to support her breathing, medications to control fever, intravenous fluids, and close monitoring by the healthcare team. She responded well to treatment, with her breathing improving, the fever subsiding, and her overall condition stabilizing. Following successful treatment, Metrine made a good recovery and was discharged in stable condition. Her grandmother expressed heartfelt appreciation to Helpster Charity Organization and Kory Family Hospital for their timely medical care, financial support, and compassionate assistance, which enabled her granddaughter to receive the treatment she needed and recover successfully.

Metrine's clinical presentation is consistent with severe pneumonia requiring urgent hospital admission, close monitoring, oxygen therapy, appropriate intravenous antibiotics, and supportive management. The presence of respiratory distress, hypoxia, and systemic signs of infection indicates a serious illness with a high risk of complications if treatment is delayed. Further investigations, including chest imaging and laboratory tests, are necessary to confirm the diagnosis, identify the causative organism, and guide treatment. With early diagnosis, prompt antimicrobial therapy, and comprehensive supportive care, many patients recover well.
