Jane is a cheerful and playful child who enjoys handball and skipping rope with other children in her neighbourhood. She loves potatoes and yoghurt and dreams of becoming a teacher in the future. Jane lives with her mother, Teresiah, who is a single parent and also supports her elderly parents. Teresiah depends on irregular casual jobs such as washing clothes and working on farms. Work is unpredictable, sometimes unavailable for more than a week, and her limited earnings are insufficient to consistently meet the family’s basic needs. Jane developed high fever, chills, headache and difficulty in breathing four days before admission. She was initially taken to a nearby government dispensary and given treatment, but her condition continued to worsen despite the medication. With Jane becoming increasingly unwell and unable to afford further medical care, Teresiah became deeply concerned and sought advice from her pastor. The pastor informed her about Helpster Charity, after which she brought Jane to Goodhope Hospital for further assessment and treatment and to seek assistance with the cost of her inpatient medical care.

Jane was diagnosed with severe pneumonia with respiratory distress, a potentially life-threatening condition requiring inpatient care. The infection has significantly affected her breathing and places her at risk of hypoxia, sepsis and respiratory failure. She requires appropriate antibiotics, hydration and close monitoring. With prompt treatment and improvement in her respiratory status, her prognosis is favourable.
