Marium Akter is a cheerful 1-year-and-11-month-old girl living with her parents and elder sister in a four-member family in Geneva Camp, Dhaka. Her father is the only earning member, working in a salon for approximately USD 89 per month, while her mother is a homemaker, making it difficult for the family to meet daily needs and afford Marium’s medical expenses. After developing high fever, cough, diarrhea, vomiting, and reduced urine output, Marium was taken to Al-Manar Hospital, where she was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis with dehydration, pneumonia, and severe anemia. The family learned about Helpster Charity through a medical outreach camp in Geneva Camp and sought support because they could not afford the required treatment. Without timely medical care, her dehydration, pneumonia, and severe anemia could worsen rapidly, potentially leading to severe breathing problems, circulatory complications, and a life-threatening condition.

According to the doctor, hospitalization with IV fluids, injectable antibiotics such as ceftriaxone and amikacin, blood transfusion, and other supportive treatment is expected to stabilize the child, control the infection, correct dehydration, and improve the severe anemia. With timely treatment and close monitoring, the child is expected to improve gradually and return to normal feeding and daily activities. If left untreated, the infection, dehydration, and anemia may worsen, leading to severe weakness, reduced oxygen delivery, electrolyte imbalance, sepsis, and potentially life-threatening complications.
