Lopez is a four-year-old girl and the youngest of three children. She lives with her parents and siblings in a two-roomed mud-walled house without electricity. Her mother is a peasant farmer who depends on farm produce to support the household, while her father relies on irregular casual jobs whenever opportunities arise. Their limited and unpredictable income makes it difficult to meet unexpected medical expenses. Lopez had been experiencing recurrent fever, persistent cough and wheezing, which progressively worsened. Her mother initially tried to manage the illness at home by dissolving a 250 mg paracetamol tablet in water and giving it to her. However, Lopez did not improve. She became increasingly weak and uncomfortable, with worsening cough and wheezing, poor appetite and episodes of vomiting that left her unable to eat or drink normally. Concerned by the deterioration, her mother brought her to the hospital for further assessment and treatment. The family had previously heard about Helpster Charity Organization from a neighbour whose child had received treatment at the same facility with support from the charity.
