Mainasara Yakubu Baffa is an 11-month-old boy and the fourth child in a family of four. He lives with his parents, who work hard to provide for their children despite limited resources. His mother is a trader, while his father is a student striving to build a better future for the family. From birth, Mainasara experienced difficulties passing stool. He did not pass stool during his first three days of life, developed progressive abdominal swelling, and required medical assistance to pass stool. Since then, he has suffered recurrent abdominal swelling and severe constipation. Further evaluation confirmed Hirschsprung disease, a condition that affects the normal movement of stool through the intestine. As he grew, concerns also arose about delayed developmental milestones. Further assessment confirmed Down syndrome, contributing to his developmental delays and other health challenges. Mainasara continues to require specialist medical care and support to improve his health and development.

Prognosis is good with prompt surgical intervention, however delay may lead to enterocolitis, bowel perforation, chronic constipation, failure to thrive and even death. Some post surgical complications may include fecal incontinence, Hirschprung’s associated enterocolitis, fistula and some may experience constipation and may need follow up
