Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.

That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Ummukutsum is the only daughter in her family. She is a cheerful and friendly young girl who lives with her parents and 2 siblings in Kafanchan and attends Wazir Aliyu Primary School, where she enjoys learning and spending time with her classmates. The father is a tailor earning about ₦10,000 monthly. She also loves watching cartoons in her free time. Her family became concerned when her abdomen became abnormally swollen and she developed an unusual discharge that appeared to contain stool. Her mother took her to the hospital for medical evaluation. Following examination and investigations, Ummukutsum was diagnosed with intestinal malrotation, a condition in which the intestines do not develop or position normally. The doctors recommended surgery to correct the condition, restore normal intestinal function, and prevent potentially serious complications.

Prognosis

Prognosis is excellent when diagnosed and treated early before bowel ischemia occurs. Prognosis becomes bad if volvulus causes extensive bowel necrosis, leading to short bowel syndrome and long-term nutritional complications. If left untreated, intestinal malrotation can cause twisting or blockage of the intestines, leading to reduced blood supply, severe infection, intestinal damage, and potentially life-threatening complications.
